Living a Balanced Life

Printer-friendly versionPDF version

Did you ever want to be able to juggle? Have you ever admired a juggler? Most of us have tried juggling at one time or another. Some have even been able to become fairly proficient at it, but most of us haven’t been willing to put in sufficient practice to be able to do so.

Even so, we find ourselves constantly juggling our schedules with work, family and other commitments. No wonder so many find themselves burning out. It seems impossible to do everything that we need to do in a given day. Finding the proper balance between all the things we have to do and want to do is difficult. In fact, we tend to take on extra duties because it is hard to say “no.”

Our spiritual lives can also be a balancing act. We know that we should study the Bible more. But, if that is all we do, we find that we can be neglecting our families. We know that we should pray more, but also find instances in the New Testament where Christ corrected people for misguided prayers.

We should be righteous, but not righteous over-much. We should keep God’s law more diligently, but we have to realize that they are not to become the burden that the Pharisees made of them. We know we must honor God with our substance, but we have to be sure that we still provide for our families.

Maintaining a balance between our human obligations and Christian discipline is an on-going challenge.  We can only achieve good balance in both our spiritual lives and physical lives by earnestly beseeching God for wisdom.  Psalms:111:10 says:  “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; a good understanding have all they that do His Commandments.”
